Insiders said Weitz wanted the assignment bad enough that he wrote a long dissertation on exactly how he envisioned the trilogy translating to the big screen, and that Pullman, Stoppard and studio brass liked what they saw.
Okay, everyone, just breathe, and remember Stoppard’s scripting.
Update: it’s worse than it appears. Stoppard’s script dumped. References to the nasty Calvinist religion in the books to be removed from adaptation. We shake our tiny fists at Hollywood.
